Finally, Figure 9: We have ~30 compact object / ~20 black hole companion candidates! These are systems where we see the primary star orbiting something more massive than itself, but the more massive object doesn't appear in the IR spectrum. Expect to see more about these soon :)

Another fav. is Figure 7, showing the beautiful signature of tidal circularization of (primarily) main sequence stars with periods <~20 days (left). Right panel shows that we are likely detecting surface jitter / stochastic pulsations as "companions" for logg <~ 1 stars

    (c) More binaries for hotter stars! This has been known for a long time, but nice to see this signature show up here as well.

    (b) There are fewer binaries at the red clump (He-burning stars that have already gone up the RGB) compared near on the RGB, consistent with the primary star having consumed their companions while at maximum size. ~5–10% of low metallicity RGB stars have eaten a companion!

Today on : binary stars from ! Figure 5 is my fav.: (a) The close binary fraction decreases w/ increased primary-star size (lower logg)! This is presumably because closer companions are consumed as the size of the primary gets larger,

keeps on delivering! Our new paper is now on the ArXiv: In the work led by we have detected the Sagittarius stream all around the sky from proper motions alone. The result: a ~300.000 stars sample (dwarf+tails) [1/3]

Applications open for the CCA Applied Galactic Dynamics Summer School, deadline 2/15. The school's aim is to make progress on outstanding problems in galaxy formation and the distribution/nature of dark matter...and it has a fun website!

It's the paper day today! TL;DR precise radial velocities of the GD-1 stellar stream possibly localize the perturber near the Sagittarius orbital plane! searches for next?

The Milky Way Is Gaining New Stars From A Collision That Hasn't Even Occurred Yet Our home galaxy is making new stars from material from the Magellanic Clouds, and they're still nearly 200,000 light-years away. Astronomy is cool.

super exciting results from - a faraway young star cluster in the Magellanic Stream, named Price-Whelan 1! (and adding to my tally of astro objects with hyphenated names)
