when vendors ask why don't you support open-telemetry (version 0.2) it is curious, because what if we decided to hard-code to census last time we were asked? or if we decided to hard-code to opentracing the time before that? why pressure adoption.. make it great instead!

  2. closest we get to unknown unknown in manual, non-dynamic instrumentation is causally linked request/response logging. picking what to instrument I don't think gets us to the unknown unknown part, certainly not looking backwards.

I tend to question labels like grassroots applied to conferences organized by and featuring mostly vendor talks, with tiered sponsorship out of the gate. or maybe grassroots means something I'm not aware of.

Now possible to filter by record headers. Key and/or value. Useful to get only specific type of events, follow a trace id (zipkin b3), a specific app-name, etc.

we say prayers to the build gods, not the build god. we'll be happy if any build god blesses the build green.

Just a reminder: picking the appropriate architecture for your application is a best practice.

it is also annoying how hard little folks have to work to raise awareness that they spoke at all. people amplify the famous during and after conferences, and this drowns out mentions of those who are new signal. it is human nature, but it is a challenge worth walking into EOF

there's an annoying spot for folks who've managed to speak at some conferences, but cannot continue because of funds and no direct sponsor. It is frustrating because they stretched comfort zone, made wins, yet have few places to go as they aren't yet famous enough to be asked

in usual conferences, there are challenges I've noticed: * english aptitude and confidence * getting humble people to accept they have something worth saying * getting over the humps of the rocky first talks * after acceptance to something, getting funds to actually get there

this is an excellent idea. This was how I got started in user groups and conferences, as I was a buddy to the famous who mentored me via "double feature" presentations, including me the nobody. hope it catches!

The amount of expectations people have for me, vendors and users alike, knowing I am a single person. If applied to the dozens on the open telemetry... could have sensors on the moon by now

we are so easily fooled that vendor things that call themselves open and standard will give us stability, when they are worse than normal open source.

OpenTracing marketed itself as a standard from the onset, never even released a 1.0 version of its java impl before canceling the project. OpenCensus also never made 1.0 in its years before canceling itself. OpenTelemetery has in all its time produced a single 0.2 release

guess it just continues the legacy of volunteers cleaning up not well thought through messes caused by forced adoption

trying to force adoption of a "standard' (quotes because very few people were in involved in it), by choosing to not implement anything else, is a cheap move ahem opentelemetry, ahem

few archetypes of large tracing sites * plus custom pipelines (ex netflix zipkin + internal stuff) * plus vendors (ex ticketmaster jaeger -> lightstep, confluent) * own (ex expedia haystack) then there's the just vendor stuff.

since cncf etc claim ticketmaster as a jaeger site.. and this blog as a lightstep site... either they are shipping to both backends, or one isn't in use. possibly it is a jaeger trace collection pipeline to lightstep? would be interesting to see a revised arch diagram

interesting blog I missed talking about ticketmaster's growing pains with their tracing setup, eventually enlisting kafka experts, as so many do
