With uneven distribution of DEM/GOP voters across big/small media markets, the difference in costs to reach voters would grow (unless we tried to normalize by government subsidizing one party or forcing media outlets to limit their revenue)...

Goldwater traveled to 46 states in final weeks in 1964 and got crushed. Nixon spent only 10 days campaigning post-convention in his 1972 landslide. Nixon spent 4x what Goldwater spent (and more then both Reagan campaigns).
