Fair argument. But to work, would need a single set of rules nationally. Are states that want their own systems willing to adopt (or keep two sets of rules for presidential and other elections)? Have to find common ground on early/absentee, voter ID, etc.https://twitter.com/EricHolder/status/1107832767751036929 …

Without the Electoral College the Democratic nominee WILL go to-among others-Texas, Georgia, Louisiana. The Republican nominee WILL go to New York, Washington and California. That’s a significant and appropriate change from what now occurs. A lot more Americans will get attention https://twitter.com/pnrodenbush/status/1107826414189973505 …

National popular vote would benefit fundraising over grassroots, non-battleground states at expense of battlegrounds, national media at expense of local media, and potentially make the House the ultimate determiner of Presidential campaigns.

Gore (2000) and Hillary (2016) both got 48% of popular vote. If they got 48% of electoral votes, a GOP House would have decided both elections.

National popular vote is not the same as national popular vote decided by plurality.

Election reforms rarely have the intended impact. Lowering voting age in 1971 helped Nixon in 1972. Campaign finance reform led to more outside spending. And adding early vote has lowered voter turnout in many cases.

With uneven distribution of DEM/GOP voters across big/small media markets, the difference in costs to reach voters would grow (unless we tried to normalize by government subsidizing one party or forcing media outlets to limit their revenue)...

Which would empower and enrich right-of-center media entities like Fox.

So if you favor empowering donors and conservative media while allowing Congress to pick your president...then national popular vote sounds like a good plan.

Also, it has nothing to do with where a candidate travels ... and everything to do with the money needed to run national (vs multi-state) campaign.

Goldwater traveled to 46 states in final weeks in 1964 and got crushed. Nixon spent only 10 days campaigning post-convention in his 1972 landslide. Nixon spent 4x what Goldwater spent (and more then both Reagan campaigns).
