My sincere apologies to all for that idiotic, impulsive, and badly judged tweet. It does not reflect my true views, values, or standards.

In case you still thought the US-China trade war had something to do with ‘fairness’ and ‘reciprocity’, here’s a US diplomat suggesting putting export controls on whatever will best ‘slow down’ China. https://www.ft.com/content/8dcb534c-dbaf-11e8-9f04-38d397e6661c …pic.twitter.com/b23qSZ2Ha1

Because it’s neither fair nor reciprocal.

there are many things in this world which are neither fair nor reciprocal, what's the connection to the US-China trade war?

It’s supposed to be about China not being fair or reciprocal.

is it fair or reciprocal that China claims Taiwan is part of China? is it fair and reciprocal that Americans owned slaves???

Probably, but this isn’t about what’s actually fair or reciprocal, it’s about what people claim is about fairness or reciprocity. I’m saying they’re wrong and it’s about raw power.

yes, export controls on militarily useful tech are absolutely about raw power. what's missing is the connection to the trade war.

It’s an example of America doing whatever the fuck it wants to maintain its advantage. Trade war is supposedly premised on America being fair while China isn’t.

yeah, America wants to maintain its military advantage. that's not something it's reasonable to ask them to give up

if you think free trade requires disarmament then trade wars are pretty much inevitable

you can make everybody richer by negotiating trade by reference to trade instead of by who stole whose islands though
