Early on the neural network landscape was fragmented. In 2015, Keras started attracting attention. Today it’s Keras/TensorFlow and PyTorch. (As of TF 2.0, Keras is the high level API for TensorFlow.) 3/3

In 2011, Random Forest started being discussed in the forums. In 2014, it was XGBoost. More recently we’ve seen LightGBM and then Catboost gaining momentum. 2/3

The biggest reasons why PyTorch became so popular on 1. Amazing model zoo. Very imp to start with a pretrained model in any comp based on NNs. 2. Compared to TF 1.x, writing models in it felt like writing C++ vs Python

the explanation is probably simplified. Converted to C++ doesn't mean hand-rewrite in C++, probably actually auto-converted to their low-level runtime. They have their own ASIC, sensors, etc., which probably has it's own tooling, drivers, staged IR, compiler.

A few years ago TensorFlow looked indomitable. Now it's on the verge of being overtaken by Pytorch. OpenAI just announced it's standardizing on Pytorch, joining the likes of Tesla, Nvidia, and FB. Google hoped TensorFlow would cement its lead in ML. It may soon be a liability.

kaggle often gets a hard time because people overfit or manipulate metrics to get good scores - honestly, reading some papers I don't see how that's any different from a lot of research being done
