I'm interviewing a male surgeon about what it's like to be a surgeon at the same time as being a man. What should I ask him?

Apparently this school district suffers from the delusion that a face recognition system will stop a shooting. It won’t. Surveillance cameras and video analytics will not prevent violence, full stop.

ironically someone who foresaw a problem and avoided it lacks the credibility of someone who blindly stumbled into the problem & survived

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about the state of race relations in America. One thing I learned from the success of ROOTS (if you don’t know, you better ask somebody) 42 years ago, was the power of storytelling as a way to bridge the gap between races.

having a stable childhood is a professional privilege I don't see discussed much. if you've been alone, or hungry, or afraid -- if affects you into adulthood. your life experiences feed into how resilient you are to change, how safe you feel, how much risk you can take.

Super interesting read on the numbers going round about fashion and the environment, especially this bit: "her students get snapped up by fashion brands at graduation, essentially privatizing the vast majority of fashion science."

At the time, I was struck by how these unintended consequences were the most visceral ones. Later in life, I came to realize that this was the norm: that the unintended consequences of any major political change are often the ones with the greatest impact. 5/

back when i was in architecture i criticized its professional gatekeeping — degree req’ts, licensure process, etc. — as “hoop-jumping”. but holy hell, at least it got us all on ~the same page, ensured we had a shared language, and that we knew what the other was talking about.

Everything is infosec in 2020. Your lightbulb ransoming your baby photos is infosec. Elections being considered illegitimate is infosec. People out in snow trying to turn the power back on is infosec. Kids dying because of antivax conspiracy theories amplified by bots is infosec.

Now that tech is in healthcare, that culture is coming along for the ride. The, “Let’s build an app to see if it helps with mental health” (or an equivalent) isn’t just naive, it can be dangerous. Running A/B tests to increase “engagement”? That can be deadly.

Tech is obsessed with the experimental learning model: Learn by trying. But there are other, less destructive, less wasteful, and more informative ways to learn too. Learn by asking & listening Learn by watching Learn by reading literature Learn by talking to experts

If you’re a white man in tech you can get away with screwing your employees, driving them into psychological despair and you can even outright steal. But somehow they always fail up.
