While the PM was in Berlin, I went to NI to meet people whose businesses rely on the seamless border with the ROI There I saw decades-old and family businesses, preparing to relocate, downsize, or be wiped out My trip to County Down & County Armagh

Funny how one of the supposed reasons for Brexit was for us to be able to strike trade deals with the US, Australia etc, but now we aren't bothered about whether we have a trade deal with the EU. Reminder: 45% of UK exports went to the EU in 2018. 1.7% to Australia.

  3. The 's Joe Owen suggests what I've heard from other trade folk on what a UK-US "deal" done in 2020 could be: A v limited agreement covering a few goods (eg. UK>US meat, whiskey), to be added to in yrs to come, celebrated w/ a big photo op

There is no such thing as 'inner' or 'outer'. But the most telling thing here is a civil servant, David Frost, was to be used for a politically directed selective briefing. Taxpayers' money being used for a politically directed briefing.

Johnson will today say that if the UK is unable to get a Canada-style deal, it‘ll “prosper” in an arrangement “like Australia’s.” Aus doesn’t have an FTA with the the EU and deals largely on WTO terms (and is not exactly a direct geographical comparison.)

When it comes to likely Brexit deal, we've gone from 'exact same benefits', to 'frictionless trade', to some friction, to now a choice btw Canada style deal OR what govt is calling Australia deal which is not a deal, but WTO arrangement with tariffs and the Irish protocol

Johnson doing himself no favours by simply saying a "deal" has been done so "no deal" is off table. He's going to have to come up with a better answer on why Austrilan style agreement is not "no trade deal".

PM says "we will not accept any diminution in food standards... but he says "to the America-bashers, in doing free trade deals we will be driven by science and not mumbo-jumbo" ... That is exactly how US has couched its approach to pathogen reduction treatments for eg chicken

Johnson says the EU must realise that “what's sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander.” As expected, he confirms he will not sign up to EU rules - aka level playing field - and adds the UK will be prepared for an Australia-style relationship w/ the EU (no FTA, mainly WTO.)

Johnson tells “anti-American” people who oppose a free trade deal with the US to “grow up, get a grip.” He says his government will not lower food and hygiene standards but adds “in doing free trade deals we will be governed br science, not mumbo jumbo.”

EU definition of 'level playing field' extends to 'common high standards' in following: * State aid * Competition * Social & employment * Environmental standards * Climate change * Tax It says they should rely on Union/international standards, ie European Court of Justice
