“Follow your passion” is bad advice: it leads to tunnel vision, discouraging us from exploring new areas. Passion isn’t a fixed interest waiting to be discovered. It’s something to develop and cultivate.https://www.cnbc.com/2018/06/22/stanford-researchers-following-your-passion-makes-you-less-successful.html …

Always felt this was disingenuous - how would a young grad know what their "passion" is? Better to be viewed as a process that changes over time rather than an outcome. The word also has a connotation of ease rather than a challenge to be embraced.

This is why “find your passion” advice is so useless. As if people are born with interests that they need to find. Interests are almost always a function of exposure. Widen the exposure, widen the surface area for potential interests.

When you widen your exposure, you get to find what you really love to do, it can be different things altogether "passions"s. No one said u should have one passion. So the advice "find your passion isn't useless, just be smart enough to understand it and use it!

Sort of confirms Tim Harford's messy concept. This advice might not be best for single-focused individuals, but just might work for those who have already embraced the concept of divergent thinking/dabbling in multiple areas/failure&success only using passion as a driving force?

thank goodness someone is saying things I have felt for years! I'm glad I'm not following my 17 year old self's passion.

I didn't know what my passion was for a long time. It evolved into helping and empowering people. I wouldn't have known that had I not tried a bunch of things. It might still change in the future.

One finds passion after putting years of experience, trying out various things. You don't start with passion..
