Large amounts of foregone utility are due to deadweight loss in the mating market. This is because of: - incomplete pricing information—one doesn't know their mate value directly - inefficient matching mechanisms - satisficing behavior (people can survive w/o relationship)
Re: the satisficing behavior referenced in the original tweet, this has only become more common as the entertainment options for bachelors/bachelorettes have improved (porn, videogames, streaming TV and movies).

To get a feel for the dating millieu of younger Millennials and older Zoomers, consider this article by the Internet's finest purveyors of journalism: https://www.buzzfeed.com/jasminsuknanan/tweets-for-single-people … What I notice underlying this satisficing behavior is a sardonic resignation, tinged with resentment.

Very interesting question is how well satisficing works long-term. In other words, how stable is the situation in India/China?
-
Right. In India, where publishing or transmitting porn is illegal, the sexual assault rate is really high. (I had heard the liberalization of porn in some areas reduced this rate, but the first study I found seems to suggest not: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4031582/ …)
