Large amounts of foregone utility are due to deadweight loss in the mating market. This is because of: - incomplete pricing information—one doesn't know their mate value directly - inefficient matching mechanisms - satisficing behavior (people can survive w/o relationship)
That is, many males have been priced out of the market. The saddest part is that this needn't be the case! There are many women who aren't well served by thebmating market, too. The issue is that these men and women often have a hard time understanding how the market works.

The issue is that asking how the market works signals a lack of social intelligence (lowering one's mate value). When you don't get pointed feedback and don't know what you should try to improve on, it's easy to get lost. Many of these people opt out of the market entirely.

Another issue is that mate value isn't a unidimensional construct. It's multivariate—some people are really into smarts, others into good looks. The problem is that people can't state their true preferences or they have a hard time finding the sub-market that they'd do well in.

Re: the satisficing behavior referenced in the original tweet, this has only become more common as the entertainment options for bachelors/bachelorettes have improved (porn, videogames, streaming TV and movies).
