Eric Juengst and I discussed the ethics of genotypic vs. phenotypic prevention, the shadow of eugenics, collective action problems in reproduction, and direct-to-consumer genetic testing. Show notes and timestamps can be found at:

Evidently "neobehaviorist" doesn't mean what I thought it does. Perhaps better language is a "blackbox approach" or "Skinnerian approach"

Joint-carving (i.e., explicitly representing our model of the world) is only useful insofar as we need to grok these models. But for many use cases, this isn’t necessary. A black box gets the job done.

If social sci is ultimately about prediction and modification of behavior (from level of atoms to groups), not joint-carving (which is for the philosophers), then it seems inevitable that ML will soon supersede top-down psych theorizing in this game.

Spicy take. I think ML won’t result in massive changes to our existing psychological ontology until more types of real-world data are collected (not just movie and shopping preferences). When they are, we’ll see a neobehaviorist revolution in social sci

Assume the person has already honed the fundamentals (body language, eye contact, vocal inflection, playfulness and humor, etc.) but simply finds most social interaction draining or boring.

Anyone have good advice tailored to aspie males on how to make friends? The usual advice—go to meetup groups, meet people at yoga/improv/sports, volunteer, be interested to be interesting—is obvious. What is the tacit knowledge in this domain that you won’t find googling?

Going from standardized tests to recommendations will compound inequality in the long-term

New publication w/: Heritability of education rises with intergenerational mobility tl;dr: Variation in intergenerational mobility by place and time is linked to social inheritance, not genes. Join me for a thread! 1/10

One year ago: Dr. He Jiankui's clinical human germline gene-editing experiment came to light, galvanizing discussion about bioethics and regulation. In the inaugural episode of The Frameshift, I discuss this topic, and many others, with Nancy King, J.D.

To get a feel for the dating millieu of younger Millennials and older Zoomers, consider this article by the Internet's finest purveyors of journalism: What I notice underlying this satisficing behavior is a sardonic resignation, tinged with resentment.

Re: the satisficing behavior referenced in the original tweet, this has only become more common as the entertainment options for bachelors/bachelorettes have improved (porn, videogames, streaming TV and movies).

Another issue is that mate value isn't a unidimensional construct. It's multivariate—some people are really into smarts, others into good looks. The problem is that people can't state their true preferences or they have a hard time finding the sub-market that they'd do well in.

The issue is that asking how the market works signals a lack of social intelligence (lowering one's mate value). When you don't get pointed feedback and don't know what you should try to improve on, it's easy to get lost. Many of these people opt out of the market entirely.

That is, many males have been priced out of the market. The saddest part is that this needn't be the case! There are many women who aren't well served by thebmating market, too. The issue is that these men and women often have a hard time understanding how the market works.

This has become particularly pronounced with the rise of social media and the ability to widen one's geographical mate search radius: given women's higher levels of selectivity compared to men, their greater choice has lead to increased inequality in mating outcomes among men.
