When I think of how essential the phone felt when I was a teenager -- how much of a lifeline it was in many ways -- and compare it to the degraded state of the contemporary phone call, I think, "Oh well. Who needed the sound of a human voice for intimate connection? We can type."

We mostly still call people when the non-web orders have arrived. My thinking is they either ordered in person or by phone, so clearly are among the vanguard.
