    this is true for all types of healthcare! private health insurance is an extremely expensive pain-in-the-ass way of doing what the government could do more equitably and efficiently

    In addition to this being a ludicrously burdensome way for individuals to get their COVID tests paid for, what's the ratio of claims processing cost to claims paid for tests at $7-15 a pop? Insane.

    Paperwork kills. Means testing and rebates and tax incentives are deliberately designed so politicians can nominally support a measure and look humane but they’re constructed in such a manner that it’s so exhausting and opaque it wears people down and imposes backdoor austerity

    I call my insurance company to get reimbursement for at-home COVID test Rep points me to 3-page, 20-question form. Tells me to print, fill, sign & mail in. Expect reimbursement within 30 days I look at form and ask what to write for “Provider’s Name” Placed on hold …

    Really really wish these people would just outright say they want teachers to teach with COVID. It’s basic math that this is what has to happen under their rubric for keeping schools open. Weird no one ever asks them this question directly!

    Would it be ideal if all schools had daily tests & great ventilation? Sure, but that’s not reality. We cannot inflict further harm to an entire generation. This is not 2020: We have vaccines + masks, and Omicron is milder. Schools must be open.

    Also more money! We’d see calls for $50,000 a teacher hazard pay paid by the federal government. Yet mysteriously any attempt at financial offsetting of risk is entirely absent from the conversation. Strange!

    If the school reopening debate were actually about protecting kids & not about breaking teachers unions, we’d see calls for tripling staff sizes & making infrastructure investments to make smaller, safer classrooms a reality - not calls for teachers to suck it up & risk death.
