Private prisons hold 8% of the prisoners. Pubic prisoners hold 92%. Private prisons make $300M in profit. Public prisons pay officers $30 BILLION in wages. It's the publics that matter. Also, the public-side story gets complicated, in ways that should matter to progressives:

More kids have perished in the US this week protecting us from terrorists than combat soldiers in Afghanistan or Iraq combined. Let that sink in.

The woman who said Emmett Till came onto her lied about what he said. The officer who killed Oscar Grant lied about what he did. The police withheld video of Sandra Bland that tells a different story. There’s a long history of black ppl being killed based on someone else’s lie.

What’s crazy about the Mueller report, is that it documented more than 251 interactions between the Trump campaign & Russia. Still no collusion? Yet if a brotha in the hood had 1 contact w/ his cousin who’s a gang member, the local police & FBI would label him a gang member

The Queens DA primary, which will pick the next head prosecutor for a borough the size of New Mexico, is 2 months from today. Let me gently suggest to all my NYC friends that the energy you're gonna spend on the 2020 race in the next 2 months would go much, much further locally.

i wrote something in the new yorker about how bothered we are by leniency. in it, i make a case for why dropping jussie's charges is the logical thing to do and in line with the office's discretionary choices.

When you ask what your DA can do for you. A 12% reduction in jail population in one of the highest carceral cities on the planet equals millions of dollars saved that can be reinvested in strategies that prevent crime. Thank you for your leadership.
