This is beyond belief. A Secretary of State openly admitting that part of the public sector on the frontline against the pandemic will have to make big cuts. The Govt would never dare say this about the NHS but social care can be hung out to dry apparentlyhttps://www.lgcplus.com/politics/coronavirus/jenrick-warns-not-all-costs-will-be-covered-as-lost-income-estimates-branded-highly-speculative-05-05-2020/ …

This is a massive miscalculation by the Govt. It will have terrible consequences for the fight against Covid generally, it will hurt those most vulnerable to Covid and it will hurt the Conservative Party politically.

And the talk of "moral hazard" again! We had that in 2008 which led to a far too sluggish response to the economic crisis. The Govt can't wait until councils are going bankrupt and care workers are being made redundant before they act. Learn from history for pity's sake.

I'm afraid I'm on a rant now but to blame councils for making investments which are now in trouble is unacceptable - those investments were entirely driven by austerity in the first place.

I'm going to stop now for sake of my blood pressure but, finally, central government criticising local government for being too slow to respond to the pandemic is just another nail in the coffin of satire!

Thanks for that, it’s a good rant & pretty spot on I’d say. It’s always thrown onto local authorities to rescue them from disasters of the govts making.
