To cap off the year, I wrote a piece on the intersection of #energy & #geopolitics. 🛢️⚒️🔌 In short, in our global energy system, fossil fuels are still king. As a result, controlling fossil energy supply chains remains the key to energy security and geopolitical influence.

My latest on Russian gas supply to Europe. TL;DR - outlook is bleak.
Quote Tweet
On Monday, I wrote: "I put the likelihood that Russian natural gas stops flowing to Europe by the end of 2022 at 60%." It seems increasingly likely that this was an under-estimate. theplugweekly.substack.com/p/the-next-sta

My latest, on the impact of America's retrenchment from foreign policy. "When the Global Policeman Retrenches..."
Quote Tweet
What will happen to the state of global #peace and order if the United States continues along its path of retrenchment from global affairs? Some thoughts below, inspired in large part by the writing and insight of @PeterZeihan. theplugweekly.substack.com/p/as-the-globa

As US #naturalgas prices hit levels not seen since 2008, I spent my morning unpacking what's going on. The impacts will be felt in: 1. European #Energy Security 2. #Fertilizer prices, and #food security 3. #Inflation

1/20 With US #naturalgas prices reaching levels not seen since before the #fracking revolution in the early 2010s, it's worth digging into the dynamics in US gas markets that are driving prices higher. Time for a 🧵 on #AmericanNaturalGas.

I think the visualization teams in many media outlets need to rethink how they map the war. Most do maps like the one on the left. But that is not reflecting their own reporting. There aren't entire *areas* that are 'under control'. On the right is a more accurate alternative.

There are many reasons why the invasion of #Ukraine disheartens me. But, most of all, I’m saddened because this catastrophe was predictable and preventable. It’s time to prioritize science and logic over hubris and naïveté in our go-forward #energypolicy. #StandWithUkriane
Quote Tweet
Energy policy runs deep within Putin's policy strategy. It is no coincidence that Europe is running low on natural gas supplies, which has forced energy and utility prices across Europe to new all-time highs. This builds of @DoombergT's latest. theplugweekly.substack.com/p/sleep-walkin

If, today, you only consume one piece of content related to Russia's attack on Ukraine, it should be this. #StandWithUkraine

.@ZelenskyyUa's tv address to the Russian (!) people might be the most moving speech that I've ever seen in my entire life. The whole world needs to see, understand and share this crucial Ukrainian message. #StandWithUkraine #Ukraine #Україна #Russia #Россия

Want to see some bullshit? Check out this advertisement! If it talks like a duck, and walks like a duck, it's a f*cking duck. Likewise, the New York Times is a biased media company. Let's call it what it is, and stop pretending it's something that it's note.

There are few online writers with whom I've been more impressed with than @Tobieh87. His hard work and dedication to consistently picking up a pen is remarkable. For anyone leaning on the "not enough time" excuse, Tobi is a case study on its falsification.

If you are looking for the hack, I can’t help. But consistency and putting relationships first works. My newsletter Nr 46 will go out today and it nearly has 100 subscribers now! 🤯 Each one is a valued reader. 🙏 It is the most important bit of writing I do every week.

I've now been using 's 'Waking Up' app for ~6 months. This past January, I began taking #mindfulness really seriously. It now feels like I'm playing a different game from my former self. Life moves slower, my memory is better, my creativity is through the roof. 🔥

Shockingly, mindfulness apps really work. This randomized controlled trial on the Headspace app finds it reduces anxiety and depression by a huge .44 standard deviations after 4 weeks - in the same range as drug treatment & cognitive behavioral therapy. adviksh.com/files/in_progr

Three hundred and sixty-something days ago, I made the decision to quit my job. Today, there isn’t a shred of doubt in my mind that the decision I made was right for me. #WorkLifeBalance #investmentbanking #ratrace #hamsterwheel
This is a key point. While one ton of CDR is same as one ton of emissions (as long as it stays out of atmosphere), it only reduces atmospheric CO2 by 0.5 tons. So if you want to reduce temps concs down to 1970 levels, you need to remove all our cumulative emissions since 1970
Quote Tweet
People working on CO₂ removal (CDR), are we all on the same page that when you remove atmospheric CO₂, the ocean and land will outgas and equilibrate with the new atmosphere so that, for example, you’d have to remove 2 GtC from the atmosphere to achieve a reduction of 1 GtC?

In a world of material plenty, it's troublingly how infrequently I get the feeling of using something down to its natural end. I might be insane, but this pen has been to war with me. It knows more about me than most of my friends and family. It's immortalized my ups and downs.

My latest piece on the Beijing #OlympicGames includes: - An 18th Century Russian narcissist - Seth Rogan & Kim Jong-Un's Butt Hole - Cloud-seeding & Weather Manipulation - Death by Decarbonization Check it out 👇

Don't be fooled by the Olympic-blue skies on display in Beijing. Nor by the foliage and greenery that gives the impression of a perfect coexistence between #nature and #humankind. This impression is as dubious and artificial as gas station sushi. 🍣 theplugweekly.substack.com/p/potemkin-oly

Cosmic Insignificance Theory is relatively simple: The anxieties that clutter our lives — relationship troubles, status rivalries, money worries, pandemics — shrink instantly down to irrelevance in the context of the cosmos in which we live.

I owe so much gratitude to for the work he put in to write 4,000 weeks: Time Management for Mortals. It's the most insightful book I've ever read. My favorite part is his concept of Cosmic Insignificance Theory. In short: The Universe Doesn’t Give a Flying Fuck.
