Because he represents his constituents and if we put in a more liberal Dem we’d lose the seat...

I thought that way pre-Kavanaugh. But if Manchin doesn’t support hardly any modern left-leaning positions and votes for awful conservative judges then what is the point? He votes with Trump 61% (!) of the time. Only 2 Democrats are even over 40% (Jones 52%, Warner 44%).
-
But still good on healthcare and tax cuts (if I’m remembering correctly). So maybe still worth it to us? I just don’t know who else could win there
-
He protected the ACA from repeal but wasn’t around to vote for it originally. When Dems push for M4A he will be an obstacle not an advocate. He should be an independent who caucuses with Dems because Democrat is a title he doesn’t deserve. His voice undermines progressive causes.
-
No WAY does he win a senate seat in WV as an independent. 0% chance of that happening.

You should correct this, as Manchin has a D rating from the NRA now. His last A rating was 2012, his support of gun control reform has caused that to change.
-
He recently got a D, but has had an A for the rest of his career including an A+ once. Recently ran an ad shooting a bill with a rifle and turned up the gun-toting rhetoric, so I’m going to judge him overall, not on the curve. Besides, every Dem should get an NRA F. Full stop.

JFC, it wasn't a bill, it was the anti-Obamacare lawsuit.https://youtu.be/tNte7Vr-IJg

Joe Manchin's impeachment vote to convict or not later this year will be the true test, and either his legacy or his downfall.
-
That vote won’t matter because if it even happens there is no chance something like 20 Republicans vote to impeach (you need 67 votes). I have a better chance of winning the lottery. The GOP has sold its soul.
-
Well technically the house votes to impeach, the senate needs 67 to convict. Trump can easily be impeach, but extremely doubtful he’d be convicted/removed from office.
-
I was told Mitt Romney alone counts as 36 votes as a special loophole from his designation as "GOP Savior". It's in the Constitution, look it up
-
LOL. If he would have integrity I could be on board with this.

I forgot the reason for not going against him. I think it was Healthcare.
-
There’s no way he’ll get on board with Medicare for All or anything that goes far enough so I really don’t see the point anymore.

Because it’s a D vote some of the time from WV and the alternative is 100 R/ Trump votes. One more D towards majority.
-
Exactly this. Basic civics.

Because the alternative was a far more conservative Repub who would caucus w/the GOP and McConnell. If Manchin’s vote would have been decisive, he would likely have voted against Kavanaugh. Once they knew it wasn’t, Shumer set him free because of his re-election in WV.
-
If we can’t see our way to allowing for more conservative Dems in places like W Virginia and Alabama, we will struggle to win & hold 50 seats.
-
Not true. Donnelly and McCaskill did not run to the left at all and still lost. Dems cannot expect to be a majority party by talking out of both sides of their mouth. Medicare for All is popular nationwide and those two are lecturing in opposition to it.
-
Running right is not my preference either, but two losses don’t mean it was a bad strategy in other red states. Worked for Tester, Manchin, Jones (in 2017 special election v. Moore). We criticize the right for Nazi-like lockstep behavior and then demand purity of Red State Dems?
-
Tester did NOT run to the right. He ran on progressive policies such as corruption and getting money out of politics. He never flip flopped and ran to the right lime Donnelly and McCaskill. And he was rewarded by being elected by a majority of his state for the first time.
-
He's also an A Rated NRA Democrat and Montana is a red state just not a hyperpartIran state.
-
I said that he ran to the center. Which he did....because he is not a highly partisan senator.
-
Not highly partisan, but better than e.g. Manchin. Tester votes with Trump 38% while Manchin is at 60%.
