This illustration of exact sequences from might be one of the best, most digestible illustrations of any concept I’ve seen. Simple yet powerful.

Here's a brief tour through recent philosophy of physics: (the first part of my post on realism is also on the blog, but it's not close to finished)

Somehow they trade (second order, social) claims about the community of mathematicians and the institution of mathematics for (first order) claims about mathematical results. They’re not social epistemologists or mathematicians, but it’s horrid intellectual dishonesty.

If modal realism is true, does that mean there’s a world in which there’s a group called “A Tribe Called Questlove” that made a song called “Snare-io”??

Was listening to the Infinite Jest audiobook while walking outside just now and came across the part with Hal’s “subnormal” standardized test scores, and soon after this I walked past a car whose license plate was “HAL2400” and needless to say I am s p o o k e d

Is there an easy way to archive lists on the MacOS/iOS Reminders app? Don't want them to clutter the "My Lists" section, but also want to keep my completed tasks & their corresponding lists stored somewhere. Idk if iCloud does this... cc

Some (maybe controversial) potential others: "New York hip-hop consists of a series of footnotes to DJ Kool Herc", "Analytic philosophy of language consists of a series of footnotes to Frege", etc.

A.N. Whitehead said “The safest general characterization of the European philosophical tradition is that it consists of a series of footnotes to Plato”; while hyperbolic, it's telling. So, a Q: what are some similar statements about (concepts in?) your subfield?

For my first arXiv paper of the Roaring 2020s, I get to share this really exciting paper (by and me)! Title: "Spatial Applications of Topological Data Analysis: Cities, Snowflakes, Random Structures, and Spiders Spinning Under the Influence"

He has used, for instance, arguments from scientific publication efficiency ("Epistemic Pragmatism", pp. 52-54) in his justification, but I'm not sure how well it holds up elsewhere / how prone it is to metric abuse

This seems vaguely plausible to me using combinatorial heuristics, but I can't shake the feeling that its validity is too sensitive to context (we talking about collective/distributed knowledge? how is the info aggregated/demarcated? ...)?

What are people's views on Rescher's epistemic law of diminishing returns (i.e. knowledge tends to grows approximately logarithmically with amount of available information)?
