More DA diabolicalness from today’s SMH and Age “Time to acquire scythed flower herb?(5)” HINT; cut (scythe) the first letter off a type of flower replace it with T (time) answer = a type of herbaceous flower also known as “bitter buttons” Yep this is a David Astle cryptic!pic.twitter.com/VXjV1aM6wd

I had to google bitter buttons to get this. I would have never gotten this without the hint. The original clue is good, but I feel you’d have to be a botanist knowledge to know the flower (?pansy) then the herb Tansy

I am giving DA’s cryptics a wide berth these days - too way-out, not enough fun. I think he is a little too keen to display esoteric cleverness. Even in isolation I have better things to do. Am I the only one?

Why are you here at all? If you can't stand the heat why are you in the kitchen? Leave now, and ensure your leaving leaves no trace, no bitter aftertaste. #malcontent
