If you live in New York, the deadline for registering to vote in the Democratic Party primary is February 14 (that's if you're changing your party, it's a bit later for other voters, but get it done now!) You cannot vote in the primary if you are not registered as a Democrat.

A fascinating history of how as we know it was born, told from sources in the G&C Merriam Co. archive and from original copies of the dictionary I found on the shelves of as an undergrad.

A thread on what's been my (unpopular) opinion for years. Military reunions are deeply personal, often difficult, affairs. Doing them in public, like surprising your kid at school or wife at a football game, with tons of people looking on, is the absolute wrong way to do it.

The Merriams made Webster mean dictionary through their groundbreaking advertising campaign—using famous names to sell the dictionary as a national symbol, not as an educational work. This article considers the innovations of the Merriams as a watershed moment in advertising.

In 1828, Noah Webster finished An American Dictionary, a literary landmark but a commercial failure. After Webster’s death, publishers George and Charles Merriam achieved phenomenal success selling the dictionary as a national standard. +

I wrote the first version as an undergrad, and it was my writing sample for grad school, and then something I expanded in grad school--and then set it aside until a special issue CFP came along, almost two decades later. So happy to have it out in the world! /abstract in next

1/ Okay folks. A quick-and-dirty thread on behaving badly in Congress. <clears throat> The outrage at the Ripping Episode at the end of the last night is something to see. Yes. It had power. Yes. It sent a message that is sure to inflame some and delight others.

Trump shows how hard it can be to dislodge the frontier myth from US culture: “The American Nation was carved out of the vast frontier . . . . Our ancestors braved the unknown, tamed the wilderness, settled the Wild West.” via

people who know how organizations, bureaucracies and systems function with poorly designed and specified "apps" that continually fail. The problem is not really the technology, but the idea that local institutional knowledge and labor can be easily replaced with consultants

A few thoughts about the Iowa Caucuses: what we are seeing there is part of a larger shift, the same thing that happened with the Boeing 737 max, the MiDAS software that wrongly kicked 20k people off of unemployment in Michigan. We are seeing over and over the replacement of

    (2) The process from submission to rejection was a year. If I try to publish in another journal, it might be another year even if it is ultimately accepted. In post-tenure, I think I'll just write books. I at least get some compensation for the effort and more people will read it

All of my power point slides for class are student questions & direct quotes from their reading responses. They love it. I love it. They all want to be quoted on the slides. Their responses & questions have gotten sharp. They must have finally realized they're in charge of class.

I feel like a Buttigieg nomination would permanently ruin whatever is left of the relationship between white Democrats and Black Democrats. Like y'all really just do not care about how awful he has been to Black people or how he makes us feel, do you? Nope.
