i don't even like having interns, it stresses me out having to tell people to do work for free, i would way rather pay someone and feel like i can really rely on them. but an internship is basically an audition and the opportunities are worth way more than $10 an hour

shockingly, if you want a really cool job, you might have to do it for free for a while.

Nah that’s called taking advantage of people. Time is money, friend. Expecting free labor is pretty douchy.
-
It’s a internship to learn, voluntary, because you have a passion not a bank acct!
-
Unpaid internships are bad. The only people who can afford to take them to people who don’t really need to help in the first place because they clearly have money and a support system to be able to work for free.
-
I would never work for a company who thinks it’s OK to have a bunch of young people work for free.
-
I actually asked about my company‘s policy during the interview process and was happy to hear that they pay people a decent wage.
-
I think it's hilarious that people are saying that unpaid internships are a must for any creative. More like the start of your failure. If you can't get paid for your work as a creative, then you're not working — you're exploited. Work is paid for, end of story.
-
Most of the time, it's also hella illegal. Years after you've worked a unpaid internship, you can sue for backpay — not hard. I hope anyone who got suckered into this nonsense mentality can tell hustling from hustled.https://www.propublica.org/article/four-ways-you-can-seek-back-pay-for-an-unpaid-internship …
-
I'm sad for y'all who aren't in the creative industries telling the gainfully employed that unpaid gigs are the only way to get a foot in the door. That's some Stockholm syndrome crap. In the end, if a business can't pay employees, they're failing. Nothing to learn. Move on.

I never get the logic behind people bitching about internships. If you don't like it... Then don't take one? There are a million ways to make it in this world, yours doesn't have to have an internship. I worked all through college and that got me where I'm at. /shrug
-
Unpaid internships or internships with an extremely low stipend are the only positions that are even available to college students in my field of work. So, actually, I DID have to take them.
-
Extremely low stripends are still paid. Atleast you had that option.
-
Also, you’re missing the damn point.
-
"If you don't like it... Then don't take one?" I mean, there's your first mistake Brad: you're coming at this from the assumption that people are only thinking about themselves, rather than the wider unjust bullshit of a system that expects people to work for free.
-
Typical neoliberal. Everything's a matter of individual choices. They're literally incapable of perceiving anything structural -- to them it's just "the way things are," so taken for granted they don't even see it, like water is to a fish.
-
Yep. Not sure if you have this expression in the US, but we call it the "I'm alright Jack" mindset over here: AKA "it's only a problem if it affects me personally, and unless it's something I'm dealing with myself then people just need to accept things as they are". . .
-
We call it, “I got mine.”

They don’t understand it’s about the experience, and how being in that setting can teach you so much
-
Apparently you dont understand that things cost money and if im working for free and going to class when do i have time to work a job that pays? How am I'm suppose to eat w/o money or w/o taking out loans that ruin my credit forever
-
Welfare. What's sad is the largest growing number of folks getting on welfare are college students who literally can't afford to eat. Something you shouldn't and wouldn't have to do if you were paid.
-
Students (at least full-time) are not eligible for food stamps or most welfare programs.
-
Many work study and other students who work part time jobs can qualify for snap.
-
So be a student. Work a job to pay the bills. AND get an internship that pays nothing. That sounds reasonable.
-
Your definition of reasonable is quite different from mine.
-
Pretty sure that was sarcastic, hon :)
