The basic problem with American conservatives is that more than any other political subculture they believe in the power of systems over human judgment.
I think this strange belief in systems over everything else stems from a basic underconfidence resulting from the rejection of virtue ethics

As messed up as their ethics are liberals do actually believe in virtue and the right of virtuous leaders to exercise their judgment as sovereigns

I guess it's hard for people, especially agreeable people like Dreher, Douthat etc to abandon mainstream society's formulation of what's good and virtuous even if it conflicts with their professed belief system.

It's hilarious because the virtues that Dreher supposedly values are now seen as almost cardinal offenses by the same people whose moral system he insists on upholding
