American conservatives largely don't understand that politics is about gaining and keeping power, so they don't think in terms of gain/loss. They think about politics only in terms of "being right" (i.e., conforming to classical liberalism). In other words, they are idiots.
I don't understand what conservatives gain by virtuously acting on their commitment to free speech. Do they think it gains them a balance of good will from the other side?

I couldn't agree more. A complete failure of imagination and no matter how bad things they get they won't let go of their precious Burke or whoever it is they pretend to revere.

This is the same reason that American conservatives refuse to support policies that are highly popular, benefit their supporters, and hurt their enemies. If those policies happen to run afoul of some stupid 18th century ideas, they are just unthinkable.
