I disagree, I don't see their discarding of traditional beauty norms as undertaken in the interest of making the sexual marketplace more egalitarian, it's more about constructing a sense of self worth that isn't dependent on male approval

Yes, that is the rub. Attractiveness is really ordered to reproduction and the opposite sex, so there is a pull back towards those things no matter how hard you try to construct an argument against it.
