The most misunderstood politician in American history, aside from Alexander Hamilton, is Teddy Roosevelt. He was no trust-buster, he simply used the Sherman Act to attack his enemies and reward his friends. By 1912 he had come to disdain antitrust law and support monopolies.

Teddy Roosevelt loved war and attention, and saw aristocrats as a natural ruling class. He disdained popular agitation for reform AND tacky plutocrats. He was somewhat like both Trump and McCain, though far more intelligent and with some integrity.

Teddy Roosevelt was also fantastically racist, and tried with some success to implement the Southern strategy in 1904 that Nixon used in the 1970s. Hoover also did this in the 1920s. What Roosevelt did do was refuse to call out Federal troops to shoot miners. That was huge.

Teddy Roosevelt as the great trust-buster is as wrong as the narrative of Hamilton as a great American. Hamilton was a great man, but not a great American. He was a proto-fascist who tried to hang his enemies and we should stop pretending otherwise.https://thebaffler.com/salvos/hamilton-hustle-stoller …

Taft called Roosevelt a “dictator who, once he received a third term, would cling like a leech to the White House and never leave it until death removed him.” Sound familiar?

There's a long history of fascism/aristocracy in America, using both race and concentrations of corporate power. We have to internalize both forms of aristocracy, they are somewhat distinct and somewhat blurred, but they feed on each other.

Teddy Roosevelt: "Anarchistic speeches, writings, and meetings are essentially seditious and treasonable."

He replaced a President assassinated by an anarchist, in a time of widespread anarchist violence?
