South Asia's can be described as a tale of two governments. 1. The official governments which are corrupt, inefficient, and paralized 2. The informal social hierarchies that dominant and maintain a pre-industrial sense of order throughout rural South Asia.

South Asia avoided social collapse and revolutions was because its rural social hierarchies were so resilient and nonreliant on external governance. It didn't matter the official govt. were useless because South Asian society had developed a critical reliance on them.

Urbanization (an unstoppable process) is changing that. It renders traditional rural social structure useless, and with the official governments unable to provide a functioning urban order to integrate into, creates a mass of socially and economically alienated people.

As urban populations in South Asia become the majority in the next 20 years or so, South Asia risks a new wave of existential destabilization if they are unable to provide a functioning urban order that can integrate the new urban masses.

Here's an example. Pakistan moves, completely thanks to its traditional pre-industrial informal hierarchies. Had Pakistan lost this social structure but has the same inept government it would have either collapsed into anarchy or undergone some ideological revolution.pic.twitter.com/s5lJwkSaAp

This goes for the rest of South Asia as well.

South Asian politics are super interesting because election outcomes are usually this weird hybrid between genuine ideological waves and votes based on local service delivery capabilities of individual parties

It's why I find Imran Khan such an interesting figure. Genuinely curious where his sort of post-patronage ideological politics is headed.
