I don't think it's actually an unfair question -- real prudence matters along with all the other virtues. But
@matthewwalther is right that elites are fixated on a certain type of conventional prudence that is measured by success within bureaucracies. -
It's a strawman though. there's a big difference between being of modest means and running up large amounts of frivolous debt

Right, but there's no serious allegation that Kavanaugh did habitually run up large amounts of frivolous debt. The only news here is that he doesn't have vast amounts of savings, which is not surprising for a federal employee living in the DC area with a young family.
