I'd guess there is also a greater share of working class and lower middle class women who pursue debt funded associate degrees to get into quasi-professional service jobs (medical assistants, etc), while their male counterparts are in jobs that don't need them

In my personal experience I've seen middle class young women going to grad school as a way to escape situations in their life they aren't happy with (personal, not just professional) in their 20s, without much of a rigorous cost benefit analysis
