I don't see the point of it, we can always guarantee security for individual countries with genuine fears of invasion on a case by case basis without the need for the perpetual encircling alliance

It'll limp on until there is a genuine conflict (Turkey seems the obvious risk here) and the US won't want to get involved, most other members won't be able to get involved, and it'll be suddenly obvious it's been a dead org walking since 1989.

All just signalling in the end though, right? NATO's another cause for genuflection. If Putin started all-out war on Poland the US and others would act, but he or others could do a lot in the Baltic, Balkans, Caucasus and response would likely to be all talk.
