All Dems had to do to do very well in the mid-terms was tilt slightly center on social issues and immigration. Instead they appear to think going full socialist + open borders is the answer? It seems deranged

Someone with this Ocasio-Cortez lady's likability, but with a slightly centrist tilt on immigration and a "leave people's lives alone" tilt on LGBT/abortion/guns would be a sure winner in a bunch of swing seats

Or possibly you are inferring too much about the typical Dem candidate in a swing district from someone who won in one of the bluest districts in the country?

Nah you misunderstood, my surprise is not at Ocasio-Cortez, but at opportunists like Gillibrand running with the same rhetoric.

Gillibrand is from one of the bluest states in the country. Possibly she'll be running for president soon, and possibly she's right that this is a good angle. But she may well be wrong too. Currently polling *of Dem voters* shows them against open borders and against abolish ICE

Warren, Gillibrand, Harris (re-examine it). These are most of the 2020 frontrunners. And there hasn't really been any counter message from any other big names

Yes my point is the policy positions they are taking on immigration are out of step with Democratic voters, let alone independents

Sanders is a no. Surely Biden would be a no. Pelosi and Schumer are nos. The vast majority of Americans 1) like immigrants 2) don't want to decrease legal imm 3) want a path for those here 4) don't want open borders 5) oppose cruelty at the border 6) want less illegal imm

On the issue of what to do with asylum applicants from Central America while their asylum application is being processed, Trump's EO is supported by a much larger %age than the Dem supported position of not detaining families at all

Iirc the option on that was pure catch and release. I would guess catch and monitor (e.g. Ankle bracelet) would beat catch and detain. But also the opposition to catch and separate (the earlier Trump policy) was so strident I bet it cost Trump more than his new policy can regain

Do you earnestly think that a poll would show Americans favor, e.g. Trump on immigration over Obama on immigration?

It depends on how strongly people feel about the various subheaders that fall under the label of immigration. I personally think people are more strongly opoosed to policies that incentivize illegal immigration than cuts to legal immigration

Since illegal immigration is now relatively low and the people in the areas who receive the most of it are least against it, I doubt the opposition is that entrenched or really fundamentally about policy. Besides polls keep turning more pro-imm under Trump

The Dem position seems increasingly radical so the smart thing for GOP to do is just let them one up each other, especially given the election results in Mexico.

If there were a GOP able to hold on to the moderate positions outline above, I'd agree. But the GOP has already shown itself to be extremist and is the party in power. So probably it'll be more that the election is a referendum on GOP policies
