I see he wrote this which has a lot more insight than the Vox interview. http://www.nydailynews.com/opinion/pride-fear-small-towns-article-1.3905990?outputType=amp&cid=bitly&__twitter_impression=true … So I guess he’s playing up his findings in different ways for different audiences, which is understandable, tho the Vox way was just “I don’t get it, they’re dumb and bad.”

Vox interviewer set boundaries early. Acted like it was his job to rebut every response, not interview. Probably suspects author sympathizes too much with the bad people, kind of like how some lefties treat Angela Nagle...I don’t blame author for refusing to engage that.
