What's happening here is that the Democrats are determined to upgrade the immigration debate from a policy one to a moral/religious one. What that means is, they are refusing to concede the moral legitimacy of the other side of the debate

What are the chances the GOP keeps its backbone to stand up to the media propaganda assault? If they can manage to stand firm for a couple weeks, chances are good the media cycle shifts and attention will be drawn to the next big distracting outrage.
-
Agreed. I'm not really sure what Miller and Sessions are trying to accomplish here, tbh.
-
I suspect they're trying to establish a reputation for there being a likelihood of some kind of unpleasantness to deter further waves from trying to enter illegally. If the worst that they can expect is to be sent back, of course more will take their chances.
-
it seems dumb to court this sort of political chaos to deter what is ultimately a relatively small portion of illegal immigration
-
I thought the travel ban was dumb, too

The recent escalation seems a Trump administration decision. And it's much more than just Dems who have turned it into a moral issue.
-
I, too, would like a sober debate over immigration policy but the administration's actions do not seem designed to engender that
-
What restrictionist measures do the Democrats seem willing to entertain? I see no evidence that they view the immigration concerns of Trump voters as anything but racism
-
They seemed up for the Graham Durbin deal until Trump killed it? Trump may have poisoned the well too much at this point
-
You mean the one that amnestied not only the DACA people but their parents too? I don't think it was something that any serious restrictionists supported
-
Then you've defined serious restrictionists to a group that's a pretty small minority
-
Graham/Durbin had the most votes of any of the 4 bills the Senate voted on iirc, and the most restrictionist one had the least
-
The Graham Durbin bill would have been the largest amnesty in the country's history as far as I recall. I asked you what restrictionist measures the Dems are willing to sign onto, to cite this as an example is absurd

But isn’t what GOP currently doing like really shooting themselves in the feet? I fail to see how handing moral high ground to opponents help to make the debate easier for restrictionists.
-
I think ultimately, structural change (demographic change) will drive more people into the Trumpist camp. Which is why I think the moral outrage on the left probably won't work long run

It will not fail. Elites usually get what they want and it is even easier than usual since the massive immigration is the past few decades drowns out the votes of the people it hurts.
