Why is McWhorter pretending that if everyone used the free test prep equally, scores would be more racially balanced?https://twitter.com/JohnHMcWhorter/status/1007393719060922368 …

They might be -more- equalized. But it’s a matter of quantity of test prep not just binary; I taught a Stuy prep after school, and all the kids did better at the end than at the beginning but the kids who made huge gains were doing additional prep in Chinatown or on their own.

So, I thought the class was a pretty good thing even for the black and Hispanic kids who were fairly bright and attended the class but didn’t get into any selective school (we tended to get them into other good non tested/holistic admissions HS) but...

To really surge your score you needed to either be super bright (there were some number of kids who barely practiced and got into Stuy) or grind grind grind, and the distribution of kids who could do the latter is unfort as racially biased as the latter

That seems to be a large part of the Asian advantage. Seems like these tests have a huge potential for improvement for smart people who practice an insane amount

The SAT is the same. I’m perfectly willing to believe there are a lot of sharp Asian Americans out there but there’s also a lot who are pretty much maxing these tests out after hundreds of hours of preparation.
