Shadi Hamid's point that Islam is the most modern major religion is a good one. The thing about Islam that is impressive is that you have incredibly demanding religious practice that's deeply rooted in tradition (like praying 5 times a day) and yet it never seems dated like

I can't remember where I read this, but someone wrote that Burkean "traditions" only become traditions when they're dead or dying. The reason Islamic practice isn't "tradition" is because it's very much alive
