Most of this story is about this woman’s inability to resist fast food. People of all incomes have this problem. An integralist state would have a simple solution: ban or (better) very heavily tax fast food restaurants.https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2018/07/being-black-in-america-can-be-hazardous-to-your-health/561740/ …

Many people begin a diet by getting rid of all the junk food in the house—just as Ulysses had his crew tie him to the mast to resist the Sirens’ song. Liberalism usually makes it impossible to go farther. But integralism can extend Ulysses’ strategy to the whole polis.pic.twitter.com/J08HekJIUp

Prohibition of alcohol and narcotics have both failed miserably when tried. In the former case, they also deprived moderate drinkers of a legitimate pleasure. Taxation and blue laws (restricted hours) are better strategies for keeping Ulysses out of McDonald’s.pic.twitter.com/zmdb5UK072

My favorite counter intuitive take is that Prohibition was actually pretty successful. There's quite a lot of literature out there that convincingly makes the argument

I guess the debate really hinges on how much of the increase in homicide was attributable to Prohibition and whether it made up for the reduced deaths from cirrhosis/accidents etc.
