It's probably somewhere in between UK/Canada and India/Israel/Turkey. My view is that religion is pretty much the only effective organizing principle for the lower middle class

To be quite fair, that sounds like an East Asian developmental state (Japan, Korea), which seem somewhat better on the atomization point, but not perfect. But maybe non-bureaucratic Tory socialism? I'm a big fan of using Thaler-Sunstein "nudge" to promote pro-social outcomes.

I actually have no idea, I should have a friend ask him. To be quite fair, child support less important in Japan, where the cost of raising a child is much much lower than the US. I have Japanese friends who pay like $150 a month for childcare holy shit

It's not that bad. Japan =fertility rate of 1.5 now, which is around where white Americans are at. Much higher rate than say, the 1.0 of Asian-Americans or white Californians. The 1.1 fertility rate in Tokyo also much better than the 0.2 fertility rate of white San Franciscans
-
Low Japanese birthrates, I think largely attributable to high levels of urbanization (I mean, Tokyo alone has about 1/4th of the country). If San Francisco were 1/4th of America, we'd have the worst birth rate on Earth.

Why is China instructive? Coastal China essentially has a capitalistic economy and China's cultural ethos is essentially socially liberal (progress above all, secularism/anti-religion, materialism, individualism). China is fairly socially liberal for its level of economic dev.
-
Because it's an absolutist regime. Also, I'm not sure that China can be classified as socially liberal, they certainly don't subscribe to the nonsense on immigration or gender/race that Western liberals do.
-
Yes, but I strongly suspect the neolibs would prefer to have an absolutist regime here (democracy only being tolerable when it ratifies neoliberal policy). The "nonsense on gender" is actually becoming more mainstream in China - the Vagina Monologues a big hit in China.

Yeah, Iran's fertility is the ultimate blackpill

to be quite fair, a society where 50% of people have 2 kids and 50% have 1 kid seems a lot better than our hellsociety, where 50% of people have 4 kids and 50% are forever alone. IMO, fertility rate by itself not a GREAT sign of how strong a society is.
