2/ I certainly subscribe to the idea that everything the brain does is in the service of action. Otherwise brains would never have evolved at all. Natural selection operates on the consequences of action, not on the consequences of thought alone.

3/ You can think all you like, but unless those thoughts change the world in some way through direct action or communication nothing will happen. Thus, I would regard perception, cognition, and emotion as handmaidens to action - sharpening (or not) the effectiveness of an action.

4/ The effect that thought has on a particular course of action need not be immediate. It could take years to be realized. But in any case, the shaping of cognitive processing over generations can occur only through the actions that the cognitive processing influences.

5/ In short, the fitness of an individual is determined by its actions -- and in the end by its ability to project its genes (that shape the development of its brain) into subsequent generations. Much of this is discussed here (see Chapter 8).https://www.oxfordscholarship.com/view/10.1093/acprof:oso/9780198524724.001.0001/acprof-9780198524724 …

"your thoughts change the world"; that's agency. Also, locomotion; which isn't agency, exactly, but a platform for agency. Where you are determines what you can do.

Your thoughts may change your world they don't change the world without movement. Locomotion is definitely agency.

Thought provoking thread, that left me wondering if you would agree that natural selection can act on inaction as well action. There are some circumstances where the optimal survival decision is not to take action, such as for a prey to remain still.

If you think of inhibition as being the product of an action (e.g. release of GABA), then not acting is also an action.
