No one should be required to give up one fundamental right—the right to privacy—in order to exercise another—the right to vote. Every voter should have the chance to protect their privacy while exercising their right to vote, but this bill, as introduced, doesn’t accomplish that.
We support the bill’s provision to let someone request to keep their voter information private if they fear for their or their family’s safety, but this bill should extend that option to all voters.
People worried about identity theft, for instance, may also want to keep their information private.
By failing to define the categories of people who could access voter registry information, this bill may also run afoul of the 1st Amendment. As introduced, the bill mentions “journalistic purposes,” but it doesn’t define what those are. This could leave the door open for abuse.
This bill is well-intentioned, but it needs improvement. We encourage the legislature to amend the bill to create stronger privacy protections, balanced with better First Amendment provisions, to safeguard all CT voters’ privacy while upholding freedom of the press.
