When one survivor came forward to Canton police in 2017, instead of treating her like a victim of sexual assault, police appear to have subjected her to further shame, humiliation, and retaliation, including by filing criminal charges against her.

Survivors, especially BIPOC and LGBTQ survivors, already face serious barriers to coming forward about sexual assault, including when reporting it. No survivor should have to face the kinds of things Canton police were reported to have done in this case.

In a decision, the court said the Canton police employees’ behavior was so unreasonable + biased that it couldn’t even be shielded by qualified immunity. But the Town is trying to appeal.
