Stereotypes and marginalization of trans student athletes are rooted in the same kind of gender discrimination and stereotyping that has held back cisgender women athletes. Inaccurate stereotypes about biology, athleticism, and gender hurt everyone, including cisgender women.
Transgender athletes – especially Black transgender girls and women – face systemic barriers to participation in athletics and all aspects of public life. This discrimination is wrong, and it has no place in our society. Transgender people belong.
Title IX, a federal civil rights law, protects all students – including trans people – on the basis of sex. It has long prohibited the kinds of sex discrimination, rooted in misinformation about biology and gender, used to try barring transgender girls from sports.
Connecticut state law prohibits discrimination against people on the basis of sex and on the basis of gender identity or expression. Connecticut's CIAC athletic policies also follow that law by preventing discrimination against transgender kids.
