Today, the New Britain State's Attorney released his decision not to seek accountability for Waterbury police officer Ronald Tompkins, who killed Edward Gendron on January 20, 2020. This report was released days before the legislature votes on a police accountability bill.
Right there, literally in bold font in the report: Connecticut's test (use of force standard) that prosecutors use to decide whether to seek accountability for police who hurt or kill people is not based in facts, but on one police employee's viewpoint in one moment. AND YET
Instead of calling for changing the use of force standard --a meaningful police accountability measure, and something his own report clearly shows is necessary -- the prosecutor used this report to call for giving prosecutors more unchecked powers.
Edward Gendron should still be alive today. On many levels, the prosecutor's report about his death is the latest to show there is no justice and no peace in Connecticut's current policing system, which doesn't hold police accountable.
