Connecticut’s prison population has now officially been reduced by half since its peak in 2008.
While fewer people in prison is good news, we’re not celebrating, and we’re still fighting.

The 9,945 people who are incarcerated today, on July 1, 2020, are people, whose lives, health, and dignity matter. 9,945 people may be less than 2008, but it’s still more than any other point in Connecticut’s history before 1990.

And again, because we can’t say it enough times: Connecticut’s prison population remains a reflection of racism at the bedrock of the criminal legal system – racism that definitely hasn’t been rooted out.

Everyone has to keep fighting. Connecticut's 50% reduction shows that reducing incarceration is completely possible, and it also shows exactly how much more work needs to be done.
