      While the CT DOC has given some incarcerated people credit card-sized bars of soap during the pandemic, others have to buy it through commissary (at a cost equal to about 20% of one week's wages).pic.twitter.com/xkww5DjbyT

      PDF reads in part: "Bc we usually do not get free soap from the prison, we have to buy it on our own from the commissary. It costs $0.90. That might not sound like a lot, but to put it in context, weekly wages for people who are employed by the DOC is around $5.50. That means a bar of soap is equal to almost 20% of our weekly salary."

      PDF reads in part: "I can't shower at all while I'm here...I cannot order commissary. I feel like they are punishing us for having COVID-19. I was given a care package of a toothbrush and toothpaste, soap, and shampoo when I arrived at Northern. But it's not very useful because we can't shower. If we want to wash, we have to do so in the sink, which is not clean."

      No cleaning supplies are available for purchase in the commissary. Some people are given supplies to disinfect their cells once per week. Others aren’t. They're left trying to use soap or shampoo to clean themselves, their cells, their masks if they have them.pic.twitter.com/xSRqfCgxIm

      PDF reads in part: "We have to use this bar of soap to clean our living quarters as well. It's a small bar of soap. I try to keep my cell clean by ripping pieces of fabric from my towel and using soap or shampoo to clean the floors."

      In some CT DOC facilities, people are given one bottle of bleach to last a 100-person dormitory for a week. In others, they’re given only diluted bleach or diluted Lemonall. People are left having to choose between cleaning themselves or their living areas.pic.twitter.com/URiz98dKqa

      Common areas and showers are shared by tens or hundreds of people. Some are being cleaned only once a day. In some CT DOC facilities, handcuffs are used to move people out of their cells, and the handcuffs aren’t sanitized between uses.

However, it is difficult to follow the advice about sanitizing because we don't always have Lemonall, the provided cleaning material, and correctional officers are constantly coming in and out of our cells."

          Last week, the DOC said it was going to start spraying disinfectant in some spaces. But it's unclear what chemicals the DOC is using, or if it's taking safety precautions like 1) moving people out of harm's way while spraying 2) thoroughly ventilating spaces after spraying.

          PDF reads in part: "The whole time we were in quarantine, we didn't get new jumpsuits or new bedrolls. They didn't give us any tools or detergent to clean the cell for the whole 15 days. They never picked up our meal trays or any leftover food after we were done eating, and they only emptied the garbage one time while we were in there. It was disgusting. We weren't allowed to use the phones to tell our families"
