As the country waits for the verdict in Derek Chauvin's trial in Minnesota, a reminder: Real justice would have been George Floyd being able to return home. Real justice means ending all police violence against Black people, in Connecticut and throughout the U.S.

The human and financial costs of policing are astronomical. Every penny our state puts into policing is money it could be spending on our children, healthcare, housing, jobs – the things that make us strong.

Meme with the words "75% of voters in Bridgeport, Hartford, New Haven agree, and 49% strongly agree, that spending on police often makes up very large portions of local government budgets, and that communities should redirect some of this funding to social services instead." in the center. If CT is going to be fairer, stronger, and safer, our state needs to make sure that people returning home after incarceration, who earned the right to be part of our communities, have a chance at supporting themselves and their families.

This is great news. For people who are incarcerated, being able to maintain family and community bonds is crucial to mental health, physical health, community health, and community safety. Let's pass SB 972!

Black and Latinx communities across this state don’t have public safety: they have police. It’s time for Connecticut to invest in the things that make us safe and strong, not police.

Meme with the words "52% of voters in Bridgeport, Hartford and New Haven have themselves been, or know someone who has been, personally harassed or harmed by the police. In other words, the majority of voters in these cities report being directly or indirectly harmed by police." The number 52 is enlarged. ACLU-CT logo on the top right.

Ma'Khia Bryant was 16 years old and had her entire life ahead of her. For the second time in less than a week, we are collectively mourning a child killed by the police. We'll say it again — a system that kills children with impunity cannot be reformed.

Discrimination against formerly incarcerated people disproportionately hurts people of color. Laws preventing people from participating in society were passed as part of Jim Crow. Passing a strong Clean Slate with anti-discrimination protections is a racial justice issue.

“We need to pass SB 1019 so that people can finally come home and be rehabilitated just like society thinks their tax dollars are paying for. What this bill would mean to me: I would be free." - Carrie Perez,

Clean Slate is a racial justice issue. “The racist, immoral, and downright evil legacies of the war on drugs and mass incarceration ... disproportionately target and disenfranchise Black and Brown people.” - Reverend Philippe Andal,

“I believe in accountability. I believe in a CT that does not perpetually lock individuals out of the job market. I believe in a CT that does not deny people housing simply due to their criminal record. I believe in a state that does not discriminate against people w/a record.”
