Bela Bhatia, a human rights lawyer, lives in Bastar, India, the site of a conflict between the Indian gov't and Communist Party of India. She believes she was targeted in the NSO hack because she has spoken out against the impunity of the police and paramilitary.pic.twitter.com/eGSDdl0Oyu

Aboubakr Jamaï, a journalist in Morocco, says that he feels that both his professional and personal relationships are at risk, following the hack. "You put at risk your relatives and friends by the mere fact of freely talking to them on the phone," he says.pic.twitter.com/ceW3KEP81Y

Placide Kayumba says he was targeted because he has been criticizing the Rwandan gov't, following the disappearances of activists. "I was considered an enemy of the state. I’m not surprised that I was targeted by spyware [so that the gov't can] see who I was in touch with."pic.twitter.com/H4QodgUIgk

"I feel invaded, harassed, and severely violated," says Fouad Abdelmoumni, a human rights activist in Morocco. After he had posted on FB about the hack, his sister received a call (supposedly from the police) that he had been imprisoned, which wasn't true. It was intimidation.pic.twitter.com/qlB8VOs19t

RT this thread to help ensure these brave human rights defenders’ stories are heard. NSO Group must be brought to justice for its failure to protect dissenting voices from its harmful tools.https://www.accessnow.org/nso-whatsapp-hacking-victims-stories/ …

We call on NSO to acknowledge its human rights impact, take steps to remedy past harms, and stop selling its surveillance tech to gov’ts that will use them to target activists and other innocent people.

We thank @hrw, @internetfreedom, @pressfreedom, and others who helped bring these stories to light — but most importantly, the courageous survivors of the NSO hack themselves.
