I used to do maths. I still do, but I'm less sure of that part.

Now that we've gotten every nerd on the internet to say "my priors" and "update", we need to start getting people to refer to predictions as "hat".

Also it doesn't help that I'm being forced to take this job almost literally at gunpoint.

It's day 4 of my new job and I've already given up on making anything of myself here. I mean, it's partly because my company is an evil company actively making the world worse, but it's also because the people running this show are very much not nice people.

the great curse of being a non-native speaker is that people can't tell if I'm using incorrect grammar for stylistic reasons

Oh wow tweeting really does have a much lower activation energy than blogging. Why did I think I needed a "serious blog" just so I could write things

And when you've tried half a dozen things, then you can figure out which one you want to get a coach for. Because seriously, you'll improve a *lot* quicker in almost anything with someone showing you the ropes, but you can't do everything under adult supervision.

... that you can only really train by trying slightly dangerous things and sometimes getting hurt. The trick, of course, is to only ever get slightly hurt. People who can do this, who can fail safely and iterate quickly, will have a much richer life!

But I want to draw attention to the first reason. You can *get better at winging things!* Quickly figuring out the bare minimum to not get hurt, and knowing when to push boundaries and when things are actually dangerous is a skill! And it's an incredibly useful skill...

    2. You're not going to get a coach for most of the things you think you might want to try. 3. We're terrible at weighing risks and the internet (concentrates extreme cases in our mind) + coaches with a profit motive lead us to consistently overweigh the worst-case scenarios.

But in the typical case, I think that just trying things way outperforms waiting until you have a professional coach. Three reasons in descending order of importance. 1. Winging things is itself an ability that you can get better at.

And there *are* activities you really shouldn't even attempt without professional supervision. I wouldn't want to go BASE jumping without a pro watching me. Actually, I don't think people should be BASE jumping at all, but you see the point.

Now, it's of course true that some people will get injured lifting, some people will damage their voice, and if you've ever tried to teach students maths you know they do in fact have a ton of bad habits coming from muddled thinking that's going to take a lot of sorting out.

Hell, I've even seen private maths tutors say primary school-aged children will learn bad habits that'll make it harder for them to get into a good university if you let them just do their own thing! (relevant: this happened in Korea)

But I see the latter everywhere. Personal Trainers are happy to frighten you into thinking you'll put your back out if you try to lift something heavy without personalized instruction. Vocal coaches say you'll get vocal damage if you sing incorrectly...

Thinking about how "you should pay a professional to teach you" is almost always good advice while "you shouldn't do that until you can afford lessons" almost always isn't.
