I enjoyed reading this paper because it challenges the common practice of equating years of experience with ability. It's a worthwhile read for anyone thinking about their engineering recruiting and hiring practices. Full summary:

Years of experience correlates only slightly with programmer efficacy. Self-estimation and learning behaviors are more predictive.

Does Experience Matter?

3. Programmers with higher efficacy experienced lower cognitive load, as well as fewer spikes where they were overwhelmed.

2. Programmers with higher efficacy read code in a more efficient manner. They quickly move and focus on the most relevant parts of the code, whereas programmers with lower efficacy spend more time studying the entirety of the code.

Researchers at Saarland University studied the relationship between programming experience and efficacy. Here’s what they found: 1. Years of experience does not correlate with programmer efficacy, but self-estimation and indicators of learning eagerness do.

It is impossible to measure the effectiveness of tools and techniques in software development because we have no way of measuring our output, and thus our productivity.

In 2003,

wrote: "You would think that lines of code are dead, but it seems that every month I see productivity studies based on lines of code, even in respected journals that should know better." LOC still isn't dead, 20 yrs later. How come?
