This lawsuit actually goes to the core of the collective dehumanization of Palestinians. Between the river and the sea, one people’s shouldn’t complain about a brutal military occupation and lack of citizenship, while another has the right to their favorite ice cream.
It’s not uncommon to hear in Israel that the occupation of the West Bank isn’t “that bad” and that Gaza isn’t occupied at all — but look how low the bar is to what constitutes an infringement of the rights of Israelis. It’s his *favorite* ice cream. Someone call The Hague STAT.
It’s amazing to see someone so blatantly articulates not that their presence in occupied territories as an occupier is “necessary” or anything like that — but that it must be fun. If you aren’t having fun, eating your fave ice cream while occupying, what’s the point even?!
This will be unpopular among some of my followers, and I do *not* expect Palestinians to view it this way, but my issue is not the individual soldiers. These are my peers from Israeli high school. They aren’t uniquely oppressive. I blame a system that requires them to oppress.
I blame a system that demands that you view other peoples as less than human to be able to do the daily tasks that you are ordered — and I’m saying that as someone who is very aware that you can refuse to participate, I did.
But this lawsuit is just… so privileged. So lacking self awareness. So, honestly, both embarrassing and revealing. It’s also cruel in the rights equations that it sets. Shameful. Not seeing the pettiness over ice cream is just next level.
