That will kill him in the GOP primary where purity is a major component. His opponents have a ton of votes on the record to hold against him, like gun control, ACA, and immigration. His opponents will label him as an opportunist. switching parties is just as likely to backfire.

I hate to bring empirical evidence into a good rant, but since 1995 there have been 10 Congressmen who switched from D to R. Only 1 was primaried, in 2010 by a tea party loon. My own Congressman, Nathan Deal, had a long, successful career after switching parties.
