In 2016, Chicago had an unprecedented spike in gun violence that made headlines nationwide. In the 3 years that followed, Chicago cut homicides & shootings by close to 40%. The decline wasn’t luck or inevitable. Thread.

  4. I hope that prosecutors with political ambitions are watching and taking note. Being ruthlessly punitive is becoming a political liability. Charging kids as adults, doling life sentences, fighting appeals from death row, and opposition communications will come back to haunt you.

  5. This country was founded rising up against a monarch. We can do it again. Trump's trial revealed an even uglier truth than his presidency - a GOP way too easy to bully into a dictatorship. But the 2nd American revolution starts today. My new column

  6. Here is my question though: is the reaction only from the pundit class or also from actual Iowa voters whose decision on who to vote depended on that poll (as a measure of electability)? Both alarming and intertwined, but hint at different problems.

people have been asking what it means to take the new wave of 'progressive DAs' seriously while also holding them accountable *and* continuing to fight the system frontally. i think this new piece by is it:

  12. "Even in jurisdictions with progressive prosecutors, incarceration on unaffordable money bonds continues to be a problem.. [In Philadelphia] although the pretrial jail population has declined, Krasner’s prosecutors continue to request unaffordable bail."

  13. Serious question: Do we have any actual data on this? This is an empirical question. Do we know if this conventional wisdom is actually, on average, true? Political scientists and historians, I'm looking at you.

  14. During the 2003 SARS outbreak, Philadelphia’s Chinatown lost 50% of its business. Philly had 0 SARS cases. Now w/ coronavirus there are already instances of anti-Chinese racism painted as public health “precautions.” Epidemics are no excuse for bigotry.

There are no documented cases of coronavirus in Philly, but foot traffic in Chinatown has plummeted and it's hitting businesses hard. The Free Library also cancelled its Chinese New Year planned for this weekend. & report

  20. I’m writing about a TV show for the first time. It’s actually really hard. I am not sure if I’m watching in the most efficient way to then write about it. It’s also hard to balance narrative/quotes with spoilers. Any advice or tips ? I want to do this justice.

  21. Political scientists: Is there any research on the relationship between primary viscousness and general election success? It’s often poised on here that a negative primary is bad for the general but do we know if that’s true? Anecdotally, to me, it doesn’t seem to be a rule.
